It’s Open Season on live music and entertainment in Brisbane with the return of The Tivoli’s wildly popular curated program of concerts and live performances from June to December 2021
Joining the fun in 2021 is The Princess Theatre, a sister venue to The Tivoli and Brisbane’s newest home for live music and the arts in Woolloongabba’s emerging lifestyle and entertainment precinct.
Venue co-owners Steve Sleswick and Dave Sleswick, alongside new Princess Theatre business partners, Steve Wilson and Simon Waide, are thrilled to announce the first round of Open Season acts, kicking off with two shows from sought-after Melbourne outfit The Paper Kites at The Princess on Friday 27 August.
“Our last Open Season program was an experiment of sorts. It was a direct and intentional action designed to positively counteract the industry-wide devastation brought by COVID-19 – to breathe life back into Brisbane’s live performing arts scene,” Dave Sleswick said.
“In 2020, the response from audiences and artists was overwhelmingly positive, selling 92 per cent of available tickets over 32 performance dates, with 18 completely sold-out shows over nine weeks.”
True to the brand of the iconic Tivoli, live music again remains at the heart of the Open Season program with a stunning program of artists and musicians handpicked to perform at across both The Tivoli and The Princess Theatre.
“The announcement of the 2021 Open Season line-up coincides with the re-launch of The Princess following a complete refurbishment and gorgeous fit-out of this historic 133-year-old heritage building,” Mr Sleswick said.
“The Paper Kites, without any specific knowledge of what the venue re-design would look like, was the first of many bands that trusted us and enthusiastically jumped on board to participate in this momentous occasion. From here on in, the rest will be history.”
As part of Open Season, The Princess Theatre will also welcome a stellar line-up of artists including King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (in a consecutive 5-show residency), Julia Jacklin, Regurgitator (in an exclusive Brisbane anniversary performance of the band’s debut album Tu-Plang), Sunnyboys (Brisbane Exclusive), Jarryd James, HTRK, The Murlocs, Tropical F*ck Storm, TEEKS (NZ), COLLAR and Amyl & the Sniffers.
The Tivoli also rolls out the red carpet for world-class musicians and performers including Marlon Williams (NZ) and Young Franco, and an exciting Nine Lives Festival line-up including headliners Stella Donnelly, Mildlife and Big Scary.
ORACLE, a new circus, burlesque, and dance production from the creators of the hit production Matador, runs from 30 September to 3 October at The Princess Theatre.
Full-scale productions such as ORACLE, Briefs Factory and Sahara Beck’s Bite Club, and Betty Grumble’s Enemies of Grooviness Eat Sh*t are also included in the program, demonstrating the organisation’s passion for presenting genre-defying, cutting-edge theatrical work.
The Open Season program will also be a welcoming home for the city’s most inclusive queer experiences: Bowerytopia, a collaboration between Shandy and The Stitchery Collective, and The Alexander Ball from the House of Alexander crew.
Numerous events within the Open Season program will be presented as part of a creative partnership forged with Brisbane Festival, with more events to be announced at both the 2021 Brisbane Festival launch in July, and in the season’s second line-up announcement on Wednesday 4 August.
“Culture and community are at the core of The Princess Theatre’s rebirth and including it in our Open Season program, in collaboration with Brisbane Festival, allows us to very visibly redefine its identity to help cement its place in Brisbane’s cultural ecology,” Mr Sleswick said.
“Open Season gives us the freedom and agency to set our creative tone of The Princess right from the beginning, giving our audiences an indication as to who we are, what our vibe is and what we want our future to look like.”
