Upon entering the theatre, the musical instruments are positioned to the left of the stage and the singers’ microphones to the right

A number of round tables are set for 6 guests and there is additional seating at the back.

The stage lighting is set to a cerise shade of pink.

My expectations were merely a musical cabaret performed by female performers.

As a relatively new resident to Brisbane, I was not aware of the history of the “Women in Voice” story until now.

I did not know that it was an iconic cabaret institution spanning 25 years of performing.

However, the vast majority of the audience members were loyal fans who had attended many previous shows and were so thrilled to continue the Women in Voice story.

The mission of the collaboration is to support and promote female artists.

Jenny Wynter was the MC and she was so funny and talented.

She can sing, dance and make the audience laugh.

She was essential to maintaining the ambience of the night.

The WiV band was wonderful, very talented musicians under the direction of Jamie Clark.

The songs were from many different genres but blended seamlessly.

The older performers have performed together over the years and last night they were joined by new members.

The mother-daughter duet and dialogue was beautiful.

It was a very enjoyable performance, the first half of the show had a little more momentum than the second half.

If you enjoy musical theatre regardless of the genre like I do, then this is the show for you.

Is it just me or does Women in Voice get better every year?

I saw my first Women in Voice way back in 2003 (I think, it's all a bit hazy that long ago) and I loved it. Every time I've had the chance to see it since then, I've walked away - or should that be danced out? - feeling...

I saw my first Women in Voice way back in 2003 (I think, it’s all a bit hazy that long ago) and I loved it.

Every time I’ve had the chance to see it since then, I’ve walked away – or should that be danced out? – feeling like I’d just spent the last few hours with a bunch of my besties down in the local pub.

And the 2019 Women in Voice is no exception!

Women in Voice has a great formula: incredible music, hilarious MC, outstanding band, bit of storytelling, some laughs, some tears and a cast of brilliant local performers.

Somehow, even though the Powerhouse Theatre was packed to the rafters, I felt as though I was in my mate’s living room chilling out, kicking back and having a killer jam session.

I love the stories the performers tell – their own stories, their connections to Women in Voice, their experience as artists.

I loved the tunes they picked – I’m still listening to Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” the morning after because whenever I hear a really good cover, it makes me want to just dive back in and have my own silent disco karaoke (ok, not so silent sometimes).

If you’re familiar with Women in Voice – great, what are you waiting for?

Treat yourself and your mates to a good night out.

If you’ve never been – there’s no time like the present so hop to and check it out!

Fabulous, Fabulous, Fabulous!

Women in Voice are unique nationally acclaimed women showcasing their exceptional vocal talents with a superb mix of songs and genres.

This show truly has something for everyone.

It’s surprising, cultural, extremely funny and dramatic as each performer takes you on a personal musical journey.

Stories are told, songs are shared and at times you could hear a pin drop as the performers captivated the audience and their imaginations.

The show was kicked into gear by the wonderfully funny award-winning improviser, emcee Jenny Wynter who razzled and dazzled her way through the show.

Next, Pauline Maudy delighted whilst reminiscing about her childhood in Paris and relocating to Australia.

The sound of beautiful French lyrics captivated everyone with La Vie En Rose being the standout.

This was followed by the golden voice of Barb Fordham and her daughter Georgie Neilsen who share not only their amazing talents, which complimented each other beautifully but their life experiences.

The enjoyment they get from singing together shone through taking the performance to another level.

Queenie van de Zandt was oh so dramatic and kept the audience absolutely spellbound.

The added theatrics highlighted the raw emotional content of her songs beautifully.

Then out came Women in Voice veteran Alison St Ledger who slammed it home rocking out Nivana and Powderfinger to name a couple, all delivered with a good dollop of humour.

The evening’s entertainment was brilliantly supported by the legendary WIV band.

It’s a must see – RUN DON’T WALK peeps. You’ll thank me later.
