SONGS MY MOTHER SANG TO ME

A recital celebrating the female poets, singers and composers who have shaped and inspired soprano Deborah Cheetham.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

This is a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with acclaimed Aboriginal-Australian soprano, actor, composer and playwright Deborah Cheetham AO, who makes her debut performance for Opera Queensland in Songs My Mother Sang To Me.

In Deborah’s words, “The stories of this continent and its people have been maintained through song by the women as custodians of culture. This recital celebrates the female poets, singers and composers who have shaped my identity through the music that has inspired me.”

Expect to hear stirring songs by the likes of Boulanger, Strauss and Puccini, as well as Deborah’s own compositions

DO I HAVE TO BE AN OPERA FAN TO ENJOY IT?

Absolutely not! In fact, OQ’s Studio Series is the perfect opportunity to sample the artform in a relaxed setting.

They’re like an opera mix-tape, with repertoire that spans arias from renowned operas, lesser-known works from well-known artists, and contemporary compositions.

From a tenor in full flight to a soprano who could stop time with her singing, these recitals allow audiences to delight in the remarkable power of the human voice in the intimacy of OQ’s newly-refurbished Studio at South Bank.

TELL ME ABOUT THE SERIES

The Studio Series offers a number of recitals across the year, featuring leading opera artists and rising stars.

Following Songs My Mother Sang to Me, save the date for Schubert’s Winterreise in May, performed by Gregory Massingham and Stephen Emmerson; soprano Eva Kong’s tour-de-force Death Becomes Her in June; A Poet’s Love in August, featuring soprano Sarah Crane and baritone Shaun Brown, with Alex Raineri on piano; and an OQ encore from soprano Alexandra Flood in September, exploring the influence of Middle and Far Eastern melody on Western classical music traditions in Eastern Promises.

Performances are held on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons and run for approximately 60 minutes without interval.

Songs My Mother Sang to Me plays at the Opera Queensland Studio, South Bank, 19 & 20 March 2021.
