Wonderland Festival

Brisbane’s sultry summer nights reveal a spectacle of the weird and wonderful as Wonderland Festival returns.

I’ve heard of this before, right?

Correct! Wonderland is Brisbane Powerhouse’s debaucherous and delightful annual summer festival, now in its sixth year. It’s a mixed-bag of brazen and beautiful acts by a bevy of local legends, national treasures, and international guest artists. All shows are united by a special kind of theatrical irreverence and you’re encouraged to bring in a drink (or two) for a riotous time.

What can I expect?

Expect gasps galore, glamour and plenty of giggles. Wonderland is Brisbane Powerhouse’s fringe offering so you can look forward to something a little different and daring. Like all great festivals, there’s a variety of genres on offer including:

  • standup comedy
  • close-up magic
  • burlesque
  • boylesque
  • contemporary music
  • cabaret

What’s the best way to choose a show?

Wonderland is the ideal time to take a gamble on something you wouldn’t ordinarily see. This year’s line-up comprises 30 spectacular events over nine nights, from blockbusters like Bombshell Burlesque and Die Hard the Movie the Play (it’s exactly what it sounds like) through to more boutique offerings like magic-realism-cabaret Awesome Ocean Party or Cabaret Star for Hire. The best part is you can see more than one show on any given night.

Worth noting:

  • Wonderland is Brisbane Powerhouse’s most significant investment in local artists, with 100% of net box office returned to those creating and delivering the work
  • Wonderland sees a whole-of-venue takeover, with pop-up performance venues and late-night lounges complementing the usual theatre spaces
  • Stick around after the performance and you’ll likely bump into the stars of the show in the bar!

WONDERLAND FESTIVAL plays Brisbane Powerhouse from 21 Nov 2019
