I wasn’t sure what to expect from this show but I love me a hybrid so the idea of “ocker opera, revamped jazz, bastardised burlesque, seductive songs and cheeky bants” sounded good to me.
The Graffiti Room at Brisbane Powerhouse is an interesting space, as it’s tiny, so you have no choice but to be up close and personal.
This show definitely was, complete with cheeky sex toy reveals and a strip down to glittery underwear and the audience had nowhere to hide – a fact the performer took full advantage of.
Miss Zella Shears (aka trained opera singer, Elizabeth Shearer) was an intriguing persona and she can certainly sing – the moments where she went ‘full opera’ were the standouts.
But I was a little non-plussed at the narrative, I wasn’t quite sure what she was trying to say or where it was going.
The show had some very funny moments but in places, the timing felt forced instead of organic and based on audience reaction.
To me, while I enjoyed the show, it felt like it was still a work in progress and that it needs further development to really hit the mark.
