Great, chilled gig

We really enjoyed this gig! Neither of us knew Tia's music but we are so glad we went. The music was easy to enjoy and groove along to and the venue was really cool.

Tia Gostelow was a vocal powerhouse, equal parts cool and humble

From the bustle of Brisbane Festival’s ‘Family Day’ on a sunny Saturday afternoon, young and old poured into the intimate Spiegeltent for a change of pace.

As the lights dimmed and Tia Gostelow, the cooly confident young songstress of the hour, graced the stage with her band, the excitement of outside was quickly forgotten.

The curious audience was tempted by the intro to opening track ‘Vague Utopia’ and soon warmly welcomed by Gostelow’s bold and powerful vocals.

The set transported us from a sticky spring afternoon to a world of mesmerising dream pop.

On the first anniversary of her debut album’s release, the set celebrated this collection of moody, coming-of-age bops (with the additional cover and newly released single).

Highlights included her very first single ‘State Of Art’, “written years ago,” about a friend’s boyfriend who she admittedly, “didn’t like very much”.

‘Strangers’, a testament to the promise of blossoming young love, was also a captivating track.

Introducing the song with the declaration, “I hate love songs,” Gostelow showed a cheeky and down-to-earth side, contrasting the effortless cool that oozed from her performance.

Peppering the set with snippets of candid insight into the tracks, admitting that she only brought 14 copies of her album to sell after the show and even inviting us to buy her a drink, Tia was as humble and charming as she was soulful and talented.

The groovy ‘Phone Me’, another youth-fueled indie banger, closed out the set on a joyful note and left me smiling at the afternoon spent with enchanting Tia Gostelow and her capable band.

I entered the magical Spiegeltent familiar with a handful of Gostelow’s songs from the radio.

Charmed by infectious tunes, honest banter and flawless toasty warm vocals, I left as a fully-fledged fan.

Tia Gostelow uses her music to deliver stories of life that resonate well with her young audience

The Spiegeltent stage was transformed brilliantly to accommodate a young standing audience.

Tia’s style was calm but she was in full command of her set of original songs, some written when she was 15.

The 4-person band connected well throughout the well-rehearsed performance which recently toured Europe with Tia’s album “Thick Skin”.

Harmonies and musical talent were brilliant and despite the low lighting, the drummer stole the show on several occasions.

It was a little hard to hear the name of some of the songs as they were introduced.

Energy generally was fairly subdued until the (triple j) ‘Like a Version’ performance of “Strangers” when the band really came alive … to a dynamic audience response!

Tia is a fabulous songwriter and insight into her new album offered promise that the best was yet to come.

Removing oneself from the perfect sunshine of a Brisbane spring day to enter into the mystical surrounds of Brisbane Festival’s stunning Speigeltent would almost have been a difficult experience if one did not know the talent that was appearing inside.

Tia Gostelow is that talent, a Queensland girl; uploading her debut single to JJJ’s unearthed in 2016 and releasing her debut album ‘Thick Skin’ in 2018.

Approaching the stage quietly, she presented her first all-ages audience an awesome show, throwing herself into her music as she moved through her set; ‘Hunger’, ‘Out Of Mind’, ‘Out Of Space’ all peppered with lovely chats and stories in between.

‘Blue Velvet’ caught my attention with its introduction; “I was listening to a lot of Lana Del Rey when I wrote this”, which she obviously was.

It was a pleasure to watch Tia and her band perform in such beautiful surrounds and while her last year spent on stage touring her debut album is coming to an end, seeing her live now only makes me more excited about where she will be heading next.

Sometimes sunshine appears in the perfect Brisbane spring sky, sometimes it appears on a stage in the form of music in a tent.

I’m so glad for Brisbane Festival and so happy I got to experience both types of sunshine on Saturday.

The Courier-Mail Spiegeltent

Mackay’s Tia Gostelow wrote ‘State of Art’ in 2015 when she was only 16 years old.

Since then she has taken the music world by storm with her 2018 debut album Thick Skin, a triple j album feature, sold-out shows, and invitations to Falls Festival, South by South West, and The Great Escape.

This year, Tia became the youngest-ever winner of the Queensland Music Awards ‘Album of The Year’.
